THE introduction of the biometric Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card registration by the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) should be scrapped off by Government.
This initiative is not feasible and will be a cost to the Zambian people and phone providers.
The current system of SIM card registration is adequate – were people are required to produce either a national registration card (NRC) or a valid passport.
The problem that we have is that ZICTA and the phone providers are not properly sharing the information being processed.
There is no need to introduce a system that will prove too costly to our people. ZICTA has stated that the introduction of the biometric system will eradicate fraud, which may not be the case.
Government, through ZICTA, should ensure that all SIM card registrations are done by accredited phone providers and ban street vendors and independent outlets from SIM card registration.
