Zesco customers dismantle K129m debt

ZESCO Limited has given away prizes worth K1 million to some of its customers who managed to clear huge debts owed to the company though the ‘Siliza Nkongole Uzawina’ promotion.
The promotion, which was launched in June this year, was meant to improve the financial position of the company which would subsequently result in improved service delivery and operational efficiency.
Zesco managing director Victor Mundende said in a speech read by director of strategy and corporate services Betsy Phiri during the prize-giving ceremony to winners in Chongwe yesterday that the promotion has helped the company collect about K60 million from the K129 million it was owed by its customers before the campaign.
“At the time this promotion was launched, Zesco was owed a substantial amount of money by domestic customers in unpaid bills and the debt had been outstanding for a long period,” he said.
Mr Mundende said the company has also embarked on an ambitious investment programme to build and install new infrastructure in generation, transmission and distribution and also rehabilitate and upgrade the existing infrastructure.
“All these investments will help Zesco improve reliability and security of supply, which ultimately benefits the customers as there will be less interruptions of power supply,” he said.
Prizes that were given include flat screen television sets and two vehicles. The grand prize of a two-bedroom house at Silverest Gardens worth K400,000 was won by Peter Tembo of Chainda township.
