Zambians urged to stay calm over Zika virus

ALVIN CHIINGA, Mpika
DEPUTY Minister of Health Chitalu Chilufya says Government has put in place strategic surveillance systems to detect the Zika virus.
Dr Chilufya said in an interview here that Zambians should not worry that the virus will spread to Zambia undetected.
“I want to assure the people that the Government has already put measures in place so that as a country, we are not caught unawares of the Zika virus,” he said.
Dr Chilufya said Government is following the World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines to ensure that surveillance systems of such viruses are taken into consideration.
And Dr Chilufya has warned local contractors who are in the habit of not paying their workers after being sub-contracted.
“I want to warn local contractors who are usually sub-contracted to know that we know they are not paying their workers for many months even after they have been paid themselves,” he said.
Dr Chilufya said it is wrong for some local contractors do be doing such things because President Lungu’s administration is committed to ensuring that the construction of the 650 health posts proceeds smoothly.
He reiterated that the facilities will provide a critical interface between health providers and those seeking medical attention.
Dr Chilufya said Government has already put in place the human resource to be deployed to the 650 health posts across the country.
