Zambia to host WBC title fight

THE World Boxing Council (WBC) has given Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions (OQBP) the right to stage the bantamweight title fight between Catherine Phiri and Jessica Gonzalez of Mexico.
OQBP director of operations Chris Malunga confirmed the development in Lusaka yesterday.
Malunga said WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman informed him yesterday that his organisation had been picked to stage the fight between Phiri and Gonzalez.
He said the purse bid was conducted by WBC in Mexico City on Tuesday.
Both OQBP and Gonzalez’s camp were bidding to host the bout and WBC asked them to submit their purse bids for consideration.
Malunga said the fight will be staged at Government Complex in Lusaka on a date to be announced.
He said OQBP has already started working on the budget.
Malunga is happy that WBC has awarded Zambia the right to stage this important fight.
He said the gesture is an indication that Oriental Quarries is a credible stable which can stage important bouts.
“We can assure all stakeholders that we will organise one of the best tournaments ever witnessed in Zambia. We want to repay WBC for the confidence they have shown in us,” Malunga said.
