Zambezi Portland surpasses output forecast

ZAMBEZI Portland Cement surpassed its annual cement production capacity by over 100,000 tonnes last year to 473,985 tonnes due to increased demand for the building material.
The cement factory annual production capacity is 360,000 tonnes.
Company chairman Rajan Mahtani said in Masaiti recently when ZPC handed over 71 houses to families relocated following the setting up of a lime plant in Senior Chief Chiwala’s area.
“The installed capacity of the plant is 1,000 tonnes per day or 360,000 tonnes per annum. I am glad to announce that the company produced 473,985 tonnes of cement during 2014 due to effective chemical mix and production methods adopted by the company,” Dr Mahtani said.
He said ZPC is committed to investing further in Masaiti by expanding and setting up of a lime plant. The investment is expected to create a further 150 jobs within 24 months.
He also said the company will, by February, roll out concrete blocks in its quest to diversify its business line.
“We have just launched our concrete block-making facility which has a capacity to manufacture 8,000 blocks a day. The roll-out of the blocks will commence within the next one month,” he said.
Acting president Guy Scott officiated at the ceremony and urged the company to strive to hit the 500,000 tonnes of cement production annual mark.
Meanwhile, the Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) has awarded ZPC with a ZS ISO 9001:2008 certification that recognises firms’ successful establishment and implementation of quality management systems.
“This is no mean achievement and indeed it is a milestone for both ZABS and ZPC,” ZABS chairman David Nama said at the handover of the certificate.
He, however, urged ZPC that the recognition was the first step in quality management system, saying it is vital that the company maintains high quality in its operation.
