ZAFFICO to establish Pole Treatment plant

THE Zambia Forestry and Forest Industries Corporation (ZAFFICO) has embarked on a programme to set up a pole treatment plant to start supplying power transmission poles to Zesco Limited.
Zesco Limited imports transmission poles from South Africa and Zimbabwe.
In a statement released to the Daily Mail recently, ZAFFICO says the company wants to take advantage of the available business opportunity to start supplying utility poles to Zesco and other companies to reduce the deficit.
“The pole treatment plant will be treating poles that ZAFFICO will be supplying to Zesco, which has been importing poles from South Africa and Zimbabwe,” the statement reads.
However, the company could not disclose how much it will cost to set up the plant.
Transmission poles, which are also known as utility poles, support overhead power lines and various other public utilities, such as cable fibre optic cable, and related equipment such as transformers and street lights.
The poles are also required for installation of telecommunication lines among other.
All timber utility poles, need to be treated using a creosote, a dark brown oil distilled from coal tar and used as a wood preservative which contains a number of phenols, cresols, and other organic compounds, or CCA process in order for them to be protected from pest, insects, fungi infections and it is also fire retardant, taking longer to catch fire and burning.
