Wife killer jailed 10 years

CHALI MULENGA, Livingstone
THE Livingstone High Court has sentenced a 38-year-old man of Monze in Southern Province to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour for hacking his wife to death with an axe for allegedly having an affair with another man.
Judge-in-charge Ernest Mukulwamutiyo found Brian Chungu guilty of manslaughter for causing the death of Sungister Chulu in Monze on August 16 last year.
Chungu picked a quarrel with Ms Chulu after accusing her of having an extra-marital affair and during the fight he picked an axe and struck his wife twice.
In his defence, Chungu told the court he killed his wife because she provoked him by engaging in an extramarital affair with Best Benzu, although he did not produce any proof.
Mr Justice Judge Mukulwamutiyo observed that violence could not be used to settle marital differences such as suspected adultery, and that there were many contradictions in the evidence presented from both sides.
