Water utilities should take note of hazards

Dear editor,
THERE are numerous hazards associated with the operation of water treatment plants. The risk that goes with these hazards can be reduced by being aware of the situation involved and employing only qualified personnel to do the routine maintenance activities.
Most water utilities in Africa are doing away with manual water treatment plants in preference to automatically operated water treatment plants.
This means that the plant can start on its own without direct human input, allowing for the passage of high pressure water.
Lastly, I wish to commend providers that are concerned about the safety of both the workers and water consumers.
