Wacheda rides high with ‘Maliyo’

SINGER and songwriter Wacheda, whose first commercial single Iron Man featuring Cactus Agony made her dominate the Zed Top 10 chart on Zambezi Magic DStv for several weeks, is back with another video which has already excited her fans.
The Maliyo video, launched at Diamond Casino on Kafue Road in Lusaka recently, was unveiled exclusively by Zambezi Magic for television audiences in time for Christmas.
Like the Iron Man video, which topped the Zed Top 10 charts for eight weeks, Maliyo is another high quality effort that has impressed Wacheda’s fans.
Since its release, Maliyo has been trending online with many fans waxing lyrical about it.
Wacheda explains that Maliyo is Zambia’s “Africa’s” preferred derogatory term for a lazy broke man who sits around doing nothing but just dates rich women.
Wacheda, born Chimwemwe Chihana, is a Livingstone raised artiste and her distinctly contemporary urban and Afro-pop orientation has made her one of the artistes to look out for locally.
Her first commercial single, Iron Man featuring Cactus Agony which was released early last year, gained significant traction.
At the tender age of nine, Wacheda remembers having her first stage moment when she attended the Lusaka Agriculture and Commercial Show where she and her immediate older sister Wezi joined the late Daddy Zemus on stage.
She says the experience was thrilling and gave her the impetus to keep pursuing her dreams.
Through the years, Wacheda has experimented with several sounds until she finally decided to share her love of music and dance with the public.
A family-orientated wife, Wacheda says she is motivated by her love for the finer things in life. She credits industry influential women such as Maureen Lupo Lilanda and Yvonne Chaka as among her inspirations.
Wacheda writes most of her own songs and prides herself on her ability to infuse Zambian languages in to her songs.
