Victorious chairperson in court


THIRTY minutes after being declared winner in Thursday’s Lusangazi council chairperson by-election, Patrick Banda on Friday appeared in court over allegations that he possessed a fake Grade 12 certificate which he used in filing his credentials. The by-election was necessitated by the death of Patriotic Front (PF) candidate, William Banda, a month before the August 12 general election. Five days before the by-election, Mr Banda was arrested for personation after he allegedly used someone else’s Grade 12 certificate to validate his nomination. Despite his arrest, Mr Banda’s nomination remained valid because the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) could not remove him from the ballot paper as he had not been taken to court over the claims. Clad in a black slim-fit suit, which was smeared with white powder by his supporters after he was declared winner, Banda appeared before Petauke resident magistrate Ackson Mumba for personation of a person named in the school certificate.
