Use local funds for developmental projects – Mushanga

CENTRAL Province Minister Sydney Mushanga has challenged local authorities to embark on developmental projects and improve delivery of

service from locally-generated funds.
Mr Mushanga was speaking on Thursday when he inspected 10 houses that Chisamba District Council is building using locally-generated funding and Local Government Equalisation Fund (LGEF).
The project, which started in 2015 and is being undertaken at the cost of K2.9 million has reached an advanced stage.
“I want to commend the council for this project. This is a very big project, I am saying this is because accommodation has always been a challenge,” Mr Mushanga said.
Mr Mushanga said the council has led by example by constructing housing units. He urged other local authorities in Central Province to emulate Chisamba.
Mr Mushanga urged local authorities in the province to be proactive and respond to challenges of accommodation for their members of staff and local people.
He said decent accommodation motivates workers and this improves service delivery.
“If Chisamba can do it, I don’t see why we [others council] can’t do it. This will reduce challenges of accommodation as Chisamba, being a new district, has been grappling with the problem of accommodation,” Mr Mushanga said.
He implored management at the local authority to ensure the housing units are completed before the onset of the rainy season.
He also said the local authority will have more housing units as Government is constructing new houses in new townships being developed in the new district.
Mr Mushanga said the local authority has bought three vehicles, a tipper truck, a grader, and is building a shelter at a local market using LGEF and locally generated funds.
And Chisamba district council secretary Mary Lapukeni said her council will continue exploring ways of embarking of various developments using local initiatives and resources.
Ms Lapukeni said construction of the 10 housing units is one of the big projects the council has undertaken since Chisamba district was established.
