US navy envoy meets Lungu

KELVIN CHONGO, Lusaka
UNITED States (US) Ambassador to Zambia Eric Schultz and US Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Ray Mabus yesterday met President Lungu during a partnership-building visit to Lusaka.
Mr Mabus and Mr Lungu discussed potential areas of cooperation between the Zambia Defence Force (ZDF) and the US Navy, as well as Zambia’s contributions to the security and stability of the region.
“The establishment of a marine unit of the ZDF presents us with an opportunity to explore additional opportunities for cooperation and partnership development. This is especially true given the expertise of our navy in small boat and riverine operations,” Mr Mabus said.
US Embassy public affairs officer Janet Deutsch said in a statement released yesterday that Mr Schultz, Mr Mabus, and President Lungu also discussed Zambia’s hosting of Exercise Southern Accord 15, a joint-training exercise funded by US Africa Command.
