‘UPND missed the point’

KELVIN CHONGO, Lusaka
PATRIOTIC Front (PF) chairperson for information and publicity Frank Bwalya says it is highly unfair for the United Party for National Development (UPND) to claim that no positive result was yielded from the constitution-making process.
Father Bwalya said it is not true that the amended Constitution is a complete departure from the wishes of the majority of Zambians as contained in the draft constitution.
He was reacting to comments made by UPND president Hakainde Hichilema on President Lungu assenting to the amended Constitution. Mr Hichilema accused the PF of leaving out most of the provisions the people had submitted.
But Fr Bwalya said politicians should realise that mere politicking and condemning government alone will not help address the challenges being faced in the country.
“We in the PF are okay with the running mate, 50+1 clauses in the Constitution and our party President, Edgar Lungu, has no problem coming up with a running mate unlike other parties,” he said.
Fr Bwalya condemned Mr Hichilema’s attacks on President Lungu and urged Zambians to defend the head of State by voting for him massively in the August 11 tripartite elections.
On Thursday, Mr Hichilema said the UPND is yet to decide who his running mate would be in light of the opposition party having two vice-presidents – Geoffrey Mwamba and Canisius Banda.
He was on a political programme on Hot FM Radio.
“When time comes, the party’s national management committee will table the issue at an appropriate time,” he said.
