THE Ministry of General Education has been upgrading some primary schools into secondary schools.
The gesture is welcome but it must be accompanied by affirmative action so that it does not compromise the quality of secondary school education in the country.
Most schools are being upgraded without appropriate infrastructure such as laboratories for science subjects and Information and Communications Technology.
Without supporting infrastructure, most pupils struggle with science and ICT subjects and the ministry only captures this when announcing Grade 12 results.
The ministry should take stock of schools like Kamaila Secondary School in Chisamba district which have no appropriate infrastructure so that they are not examined in subjects requiring practical examinations.
