UMCIL spreads wings

UNIVERSAL Mining and Chemical Industries Limited (UMCIL) has started operations at its Sanje Hills Mine and direct reduced iron (DRI) plant with an investment of about US$120 million.

DRI, also called sponge iron, is produced from direct reduction of iron ore (in the form of lumps, pellets or fines) by a reducing gas produced from natural gas or coal.
UMCIL/Trade Kings civil engineer and spokesperson Ernest Mande said the mine will feed into the plant with iron ore, which will be processed into sponge iron, a product used in making steel and manufacturing engines for vehicles, among others.
