Traders cash in on tamarind

TRADERS at Soweto Market are cashing in on tamarind, commonly known as ‘kawawasha’ in view of recommendations by nutrition experts about the health benefits of the wild fruit.
Tamarind, which is currently in season, is in high demand with both men and women flocking to the trading place to buy it.
Some traders told Sunday Mail that the wild fruit has, somewhat suddenly, become popular because of newly acquired knowledge about its numerous health benefits.
Nancy Chusu, a tamarind trader, said there is a boom in the sale of the wild fruit, especially this year because of a sharp rise in demand.
“Currently, I buy a 90kg bag of tamarind at between K250 and K300. Some people even go as high as K350. Of course they are in season and this year has been great but that has not stopped the hike in prices. A 25 kilogramme bag is what we are now buying between K160 and K190
