Tembo finishes 4th at Africa Championship

SEKELANI Tembo was Zambia’s best performer after finishing fourth in the under-18 boys’ category at the just ended Africa Junior Chess Championship in Lusaka.
Tembo managed six points in a nine-round tournament at Golden Peacock Hotel in Lusaka.
The Zambian lost to Egyptian FIDE Master (FM) Zayan Mohammed in the final round yesterday.
Other Zambians who finished in the top 10 bracket were Simon Chanda and Shadreck Zulu, who are tied on five points, and Elias Musonda on 4.5 points.
Musonda lost the round nine match to South Africa’s Candidate Master (CM) Padayachee Kenyon while Zulu tumbled to Treppor Tibor.
Chanda held Ncube Sifiso of Zimbabwe in the last game.
In the under-eight category, Michael Hughes went down to Egyptian Khaled Yousef to end the tournament on 4.5 points.
Egyptian International Master (IM) Wagdy Andro won the under-18 boys’ category.
Zambia finished sixth with two medals – one silver and a bronze- same with Zimbabwe.
Algeria emerged overall champions with 12 medals, eight gold, three silver and a bronze while South Africa were runners-up with 13 medals – two gold, six silver and five bronze.
Egypt claimed third place with five medals, two gold, two silver and a bronze.
Botswana and Kenya, who won two medals apiece, were fourth and fifth, respectively.
