State suspends logs exports

ILLEGAL TIMBER

KELVIN CHONGO, Lusaka
GOVERNMENT has with immediate effect suspended export of logs of any timber species, including the famous mukula tree.
Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Jean Kapata said during a press briefing that in accordance with Statutory Instrument number 94 of 2015, timber export permits will only be issued for processed or sawn timber.
“Government is concerned that there is illegal harvesting and trade of the mukula tree in the country and that the trade has reached alarming levels,” she said.
Ms Kapata also said that no round logs will be allowed to be moved from any concession area beyond 100 kilometres.
“In order to enhance control at decentralised level, I have, in accordance with the Forests Act, delegated functions of control on the harvesting and trade to the provincial ministers to work with the provincial joint committee in curbing illegal activities,” Mrs Kapata said.
