State ponders quota system for gender parity

STEVEN MVULA, Parliament
CONSULTATIONS are being done to introduce the quota system in an effort to increase female representation in politics and other spheres of authority.
Vice-President Inonge Wina told Parliament yesterday that the quota system is the only sure way of getting women and other marginalised people into positions of authority.
A quota system provides for a limited or fixed number of people [usually the marginalised] to contest particular seats as a way of attaining equality.
“Zambia wants to engender the quota system. We hope that political parties will put more women in positions of authority,” she said.
