State optimistic on cultivation of coffee

GOVERNMENT is optimistic that the cultivation of coffee and potatoes in Northern Province will boost economic growth and create more jobs for the people.
And to support Government’s job creation agenda, Northern Coffee Corporation Limited (NCCL) is in 2020 expected to employ over 2,000 pickers to harvest the coffee.

Minister of Finance Felix Mutati (now Works and Supply) said the need to diversify the economy cannot be over-emphasised, and that it is significant in resource mobilisation.

“Let maize and the cash crops grow side by side, but let us have the cash crop because maize is for eating, as you know. So let us grow more cash crop because it will help us to become effective, thereby making a difference,” Mr Mutati said.
