State gives directive on delayed Freedom Park mall

KITWE City Council

THE Ministry of Local Government and Housing has directed Kitwe City Council (KCC) to compel Platinum Gold Equity, the developers of Freedom Park shopping mall, to partner with other investors to complete the project.
Government has also urged the local authority to persuade the developers to come up with another project, instead of a shopping mall following the opening of Mukuba mall just a few metres away from Freedom Park.
Council public relations manager Dorothy Sampa said yesterday that Government wants to ensure that the shopping mall is completed within the shortest possible time to improve the image of the city.
“As a local authority, we are concerned with the delay in the completion of Freedom park mall. The place has now become an eyesore in the city. However, we have received a directive from Government to suggest other alternatives to see how best the project can be completed,” Ms Sampa said.
The construction of Freedom park mall started in 2010 and the works were scheduled to be completed after 18 months.
And Ms Sampa said plans to construct an inter-city bus station in Kitwe are progressing well.
He said construction the station will help to decongest the bus stations in the central business district.
