State embarks on an ambitious programme

GOVERNMENT has embarked on an ambitious programme of constructing girl child friendly school infrastructure in order to encourage them remain in school.
Deputy Minister of General Education David Mabumba said there are a lot of factors that deter female pupils from attending class; poor infrastructure is one of them.
Speaking in Livingstone recently, Mr Mabumba said female pupils deserve proper wash rooms and also proper infrastructure if they can access education freely.
He wondered how female pupils could attend classes if a school does not have proper sanitary conditions; a situation which is different for boys.
Over 300 schools are being constructed countrywide to reduce the distance the pupils have to walk to the next available school. “How can a girl child walk a long distance? That is what has led to the high drop-out rate of female pupils in most rural areas,” he said
