State clean on maize export

NANCY SIAME, Parliament
ACTING President Inonge Wina yesterday told Parliament that there is no impropriety on the part of Zambian officials in the management of the agreement to export 100,000 tonnes of maize to Malawi.
Minister in the Office of the Vice-President Sylvia Chalikosa said on behalf of Mrs Wina that the only role Government played was to allow that maize be exported to Malawi on a government-to-government agreement and the transactions were purely on commercial terms.
Ms Chalikosa was responding to a question from Choma Central member of Parliament (MP) Cornelius Mweetwa who wanted to find out what role Government played in the export of maize to Malawi by the Zambia Cooperative Federation (ZCF) in July last year.
“The agreement was between a private company, Transglobe, and another private company engaged to transport the maize to Malawi and it had nothing to do with the Zambian government as it was only the private players involved,” she said.
