State to buy 500,000mt of maize

GOVERNMENT says it will buy only 500,000 metric tonnes of maize during this year’s crop-marketing season.
Deputy minister of Agriculture and Livestock Maxas Ng’onga said Government will not extend the maize-purchasing period once it reaches the targeted 500,000 metric tonnes.
Mr Ng’onga explained in Kaputa on Sunday that unlike the previous years when Government was compelled to extend the buying of maize after reaching its target, this time it will stick to its target.
Last season, Government doubled its target of 500,000 metric tonnes of maize bought from farmers.
He urged the private sector to mop up the excess maize that Government, through Food Reserve Agency will not buy from farmers. – ZANIS
