Spring is on for the Chinese festival

PETER CHIKWAMPU, Lusaka
ALL is set for the 2016 Chinese Spring Festival Fair, scheduled for this Sunday at Levy Park with a number of cultural and artistic performances by a visiting children’s band from China Arts Troupe of Nanjing among others.
The event slated for 10:00 hours is the fourth edition since it was introduced in Zambia.
According to information obtained from the embassy, other cultural performances will include acts by the Chinese community in Zambia, folk songs, dance, martial arts, as well as the famous lion and dragon dances.
The event which has become popular among the Zambian community gives an insight into Chinese cultural and art values and how the Chinese appreciate culture.
Since its introduction the fair has also exposed Zambian artistic acts especially in the area of traditional dance, such as Lusaka-based and renowned dance troupes, Zuba Ni Moto and Africa Directions under the auspices of a private art initiative, Amaka Arts.
Its steady growth and attractive entertainment package put up in the past years has proven to be a crowd puller attracting people of all ages and walks of life.
The event which is meant to celebrate the Chinese Spring Festival of the Chinese Lunar New Year is expected to be graced by Zambia’s First Lady Esther Lungu.
As per tradition, the organisers have also invited Chinese restaurants, hotels and lodges doing business in Zambia to showcase different varieties of authentic Chinese cuisine and services.
To colour the event, Chinese-made fireworks will brighten the sky as the event enters dusk that day. Chinese companies will also be there to display their products.
Spring Festival represents the beginning of the Chinese Lunar Year which falls on Feb. 8 this year. Year 2016 will be the Year of the Monkey.
