Seed delivery delay irks farmers

SOME co-operatives in Solwezi have bemoaned the late delivery of groundnut seed.
Moffat Kaleba, who spoke on behalf of Kambazhi Wood Co-operative of Mutanda, said delays by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock to deliver the seeds will compromise yields.
“As co-operatives in Mutanda, we have not yet received the groundnut seed and we don’t know whether the seed will come or not and this delay is likely to compromise the yields”.
Mr Kaleba said the planting period for groundnuts is almost ending, leaving most farmers to wonder if the seed will be delivered.
He urged Government to urgently address the matter before the planting season ends.
But provincial senior agribusiness and marketing development officer, Dennis Munachusa said the distribution of inputs under the Farmer Input Support Programme is on course.
Mr Munachusa said the province received 100 percent the consignment of compound D fertiliser and maize seed except for the groundnuts and rice seed which was delivered late.
