Scrap metals growing market

THE ban of scrap metal exports has enhanced the growth of the steel industry and impacted positively on job creation for Zambians, Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry Margaret Mwanakatwe has said.
In 2011, Government issued Statutory Instrument (SI) number 102 to ban scrap metal exports to protect the steel industry from collapse.
Mrs Mwanakatwe said the ban has helped to mobilise scrap metal reserves, which are feeding the steel and iron plants that are being established.
“We are now seeing steel and iron plants being established in various parts of the country. This is because of the ban on the export of scrap metal. This has greatly enhanced the growth of the steel industry,” she said.
Ms Mwanakatwe said this in a speech read for her by Copperbelt minister Mwenya Musenge during the official opening of the Zambia Metal Recycling Association conference in Kitwe yesterday.
The theme of the conference is “Metal Recycling for Positive Growth.”
