Sata: Man of action

PRESIDENT Sata will go down in history as a man of action. For the three years that he was in office, he demonstrated that he was an action orientated President.
The man will be remembered for implementing infrastructure projects that are key in spurring development in the country.
Mr Sata had embarked on massive infrastructure projects, particularly roads, which are aimed at enhancing movement of goods and services.
Government under his leadership embarked on various road development projects, including the Link Zambia 8000 which is aimed at rehabilitating roads and establishment of new roads in various parts of the country, including rural areas, Pave Zambia 2000 and L200 road project, which involves the rehabilitation of roads in Lusaka.
President Sata initiated the Link Zambia 8000 programme in 2012 with the aim of transforming Zambia from being land locked into a land-linked country in southern Africa.
The projects were started with the aim of creating connectivity and accessibility in road transport as well as lowering of total transport costs.
To date, over 1, 900 Km of roads at a total cost of about K7.1 billion have been constructed under Link Zambia.
These road works are at different stages of implementation, feasibility studies and designs, and are currently under way covering over 2, 600 Km of roads.
In the health sector, President Sata commissioned five district hospitals in Lufwanyama, Chadiza, Chiengi, Nakonde and Shangombo.
As for various parts of the country, 30 district hospitals were nearing completion as at December 2013.
Those so far completed as at December 31, 2013 included Lumwana in North-Western Province, Lufwanyama District Hospital on the Copperbelt while Chiengi was completed in the first quarter of this year.
By the end of this year, Government will embark on construction of an additional eight district hospitals in Mafinga, Ikelenge, Nalolo, Limulunga, Vubwi, Mansa, Mufulira and Chilubi.
President Sata’s reign in Government also saw his commitment to improving the education sector.
It was his desire to make education accessible to every child in the country.
To see his desire come to fruition, during the period 2011-2012, 83 schools were under construction countrywide.
Mr Sata also had a vision of creating a university in each of the 10 provinces in Zambia.  Among the 10 universities are the Construction of Robert Makasa, Paul Mushindo and Palabana
The said universities are already under way with renovations on old universities such as Chalimbana and Kwame Nkurumah also in progress.
There was no sector that he did not touch in his effort to better the lives of Zambians.
Therefore, it goes without saying that had he finished his term of office, he would have taken the country to heights that he so much aspired to.
There is need for Government to continue implementing the projects that were initiated by the late President.  Truly he was a man of action.
