Sampa’s DF banned

Minister of Home Affairs Davies Mwila

STEVEN MVULA, Lusaka
GOVERNMENT has deregistered the Democratic Front (DF) party because of ownership wrangles between founder Davies Chanda and former Matero member of Parliament (MP) Miles Sampa.
Minister of Home Affairs Davies Mwila said at a press briefing in Lusaka yesterday that following investigations by the Registrar of Societies, the rightful owner of DF is Mr Chanda.
Mr Mwila said Mr Chanda founded the DF in July 2014 as interim president but did not properly hand over to new office bearers within 14 days thereby making the new holders null and void.
“The party is not in existence. No-one will represent DF. In the interest of peace, welfare and good order, it has to cease to exist,” he said.
Mr Mwila said Mr Sampa is at liberty to go to court to challenge his decision.
“Anyone has the right to form a political party and Mr Sampa is free to challenge this decision,” he said.
When contacted for a comment, Mr Sampa said the matter is in court.
“This is prejudicial. Anyway, I will consult my lawyers,” Mr Sampa said.
When Mr Sampa announced the formation of DF, Mr Chanda countered the move and claimed to still be the interim president of the party.
