Retail giant coming to Zambia

NEWTON SIBANDA, Lusaka
GIORDANO, an international retail fashion brand, will open its store in Africa at Lusaka’s East Park Mall this month-end.
“Most clothing brands operating in Zambia are from South Africa and can claim to have a Pan-African presence at best. I think Giordano will be the first genuine global clothing brand to come to Zambia with a global footprint of over 40 countries in four Continents with Africa now being the 5th, .” says director of Giordano Zambia, Chirag Mittal.
“Anyone who has travelled to Dubai or Hong Kong will know this brand and know that it stands for great quality clothing at a great quality price! Zambians increasingly like to dress well and look sharp,” Mr Mittal said in a statement yesterday.
Giordano was founded in Hong Kong in 1981 and is now one of the world’s leading international retailers of men’s, women’s and children’s apparel and accessories.
The company is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and had an annual global turnover of approximately USD 1 billion in 2013.
The brand operates more than 2,500 retail stores in over 40 countries around the world including Canada, Russia, Australia, Hong Kong, Dubai and Singapore. It recently won the “2013 Gobal Emerging Market Retailer of the Year” Award at the prestigious Retail Leisure International Awards held in London.
Forbes Middle East has also ranked Giordano as one of the Top 100 companies making a difference in the Arab World.
To help launch the store in Zambia, Mr Mittal has commissioned specially designed Zambian national polo shirts in the men’s and women’s ranges with the number 64, to signify the year of Zambia’s independence, blazened on the fronts.
“We wanted something special and unique for Zambia. Something cool that you can wear out anywhere in the world which would have style but also national identity. Zambians are a proud people and we have much to be proud of.”
Mr Mittal says the opening of the brand’s first store in Lusaka is a landmark achievement for Zambia and recognises the country’s international standing.
The brand has also signed on former national football team captain and 2012 African Footballer of the Year, Christopher Katongo, as its brand ambassador.
