Refugee crisis emergency – Kampyongo

STEPHEN Kampyongo - Minister of Home Affairs.

NANCY SIAME, Parliament
MINISTER of Home Affairs Stephen Kampyongo says the nation is facing a humanitarian emergency following the influx of asylum-seekers from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which currently stands at over 6,000.

Mr Kampyongo told Parliament yesterday in a ministerial statement on the influx of asylum-seekers from DRC into Zambia that the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) has declared the current influx of asylum-seekers as level-one emergency.
“The response capacities of Government, UNHCR and other partners are, however, limited and have already been stretched to the limit by the number of asylum-seekers so far screened and taken in,” he said.
