Rail cargo rakes in $23m

GOVERNMENT has earned over US$23 million in the last eight months through implementation of a statutory instrument (SI) which compels transporters to ferry 30 percent of their heavy cargo by rail.
Minister of Transport and Communications Brian Mushimba said in an interview yesterday that Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) has raised over US$23 million through transportation of heavy cargo which was initially moved by road.
In January this year, Mr Mushimba signed the SI on the quota system for 30 percent of bulk cargo such as cement, sulphur, copper as well as copper and cobalt concentrates to be transported by rail
