Petauke updates farmer register

TRYNESS TEMBO, Lusaka
COOPERATIVES in Petauke have been urged to provide accurate information on the membership of their respective groups during the on-going registration programme to address the issue of ghost farmers.
The district through the department of Agriculture is updating the district farmer register to have accurate information on the number of farmers in Petauke.
Petauke district agriculture coordinator Mwaba Lubasi appealed to farmer groups to take the exercise seriously and register their membership in their various camps because it is from the information that farmer input support programme (FISP) beneficiaries will be sourced.
“I would like to advise cooperatives and other farmer groups in Petauke to provide accurate information regarding the membership of their groups during the ongoing district farmer registration programme,” Mr Lubasi said in the Zambia National Farmers’ Union Friday brief availed to the Daily Mail yesterday.
He also warned the farmers against registering ghost farmers to access more FISP inputs; however he said the introduction of the electronic voucher (E-voucher) system will help clean up such illegal activities.
In the 2014/15 farming season, Government introduced the E-voucher system which was piloted in 13 districts under FISP targeting small-scale farmers.
