Pemba cattle herder kills six-year-old

A SIX-YEAR-OLD girl of Hamalambo village in Pemba died instantly last Friday after being hit with a stick by a 17 year-old cattle herder who was incensed after she allegedly insulted him repeatedly.
Southern Province assistant commissioner of police Kashif Mphande identified the victim, who was reportedly missing the previous day, as Cynthia Mudenda of Chief Hamaundu’s area in Pemba.
The girl’s body was picked up in some bushes a few metres from her parents’ house.
Mr Mphande identified the suspect, who is in police custody and is expected to be formally charged for the murder of the child, as Augustine Mulele also of Hamalambo village.
“On January 24 this year, Gideon Mudenda of Hamaundu village in Pemba reported that his daughter, who went missing the previous day, was found dead around 10:00hours in some bushes about 200 metres from their house.
“Police went to the scene and picked the body. The head was swollen,” he said.
Mr Mphande said investigations into the matter led to the apprehension of Mulele, who confessed having committed the crime.
“Upon being interviewed, he [Mulele] revealed that the deceased insulted him repeatedly and he picked a stick and beat her in the head, picked the body and dragged it in some bush,” Mr Mphande said.
