Opposition parties jittery, says Moonga

PATRIOTIC Front (PF) member of central committee Paul Moonga says opposition political parties and sympathisers are jittery after the announcement by President Edgar Lungu that he is eligible to contest the 2021 presidential election.
Mr Moonga said the opposition should not bank on the eligibility of the President because that is the matter for the Returning Officer.
On January 7, 2017, President Lungu announced that he was available to run on the ruling party ticket should structures consider him as a candidate.
This drew angry reactions from opposition parties and their allies, who claimed that he was no longer eligible having served a full five-year tenure and another two years when he finished the term of late President Michael Sata.
The President further said he had chosen to speak about on his eligibility to stand in 2021 in order to give some form of direction to the ruling party.
“The Returning Officer, who is the Chief Justice, will veto us. If they want, let them seek the correct interpretation of the constitution in the Constitutional Court instead of suffering from unwanted diarrhoea,” Mr Moonga said.
Mr Moonga said the opposition should prepare to face President Lungu again because the PF would not change.
