‘No-one will die of hunger in Chipangali’ – MP

MWALE

MAYENGO NYIRENDA, Chipata
CHIPANGALI member of Parliament (MP) Vincent Mwale has assured people in his constituency that no-one will die of hunger due to crop failure caused by drought.
Mr Mwale said President Lungu has put in place measures to import maize if the country runs out of maize stocks.
Speaking when he paid a courtesy call on Chieftainess Mukanda of Chipata on Saturday, Mr Mwale, who is Minister of Youth, Sport and Child Development, said the country has enough maize stocks to last up to August.
“Government has put in place measures to ensure that no-one will die of hunger in case of low yields  of maize because of the poor rainfall that has affected most parts of the country,’’ Mr Mwale said.
He said Government is already talking to other countries with surplus maize stocks to explore possibilities of importing the grain.
Mr Mwale appealed to the traditional leaders to help Government to disseminate information to their subjects for them not to panic.
He said President Lungu has directed the Ministry of Agriculture to distribute early- maturing maize seed varieties to farmers who have been affected by drought so that they can re-plant.
Mr Mwale explained that only Luapula and North-Western provinces are receiving normal rainfall.
He also said relevant authorities are addressing the power deficit the country is facing.
Mr Mwale said no one is to blame for the power deficit the country is experiencing.
He also urged youths and women to form co-operatives for them to benefit from empowerment funds.
Mr Mwale said President Lungu wants to use co-operatives as a tool of distributing national resources to the people.
