ARTICLES of stone, non-alcoholic beverages and cement accounted for the increase in non-traditional exports (NTEs) to K6.2 billion in June from K4.1 billion in May. Products made from granite, natural limestone, sandstones, marble, pebble stones, slates and quartzites fall under articles of stones.
Of the total K6.2 billion, non-agricultural products accounted for a share of 67.9 percent in June compared to 65.6 percent in May. Zambia Statistics Agency statistician general Mulenga Musepa said the major export commodities from non-agricultural products were articles of stone, accounting for 17.2 percent, non-alcoholic beverages at seven percent and portland cement at six percent.
During the period under review, Zambia recorded a trade surplus of K5.3 billion from K6.9 billion in May 2021, indicating a 23.5 percent decrease. “Export earnings from non-agricultural products recorded an increase of 54.6 percent to K4.2 billion in June from K2.7 billion in May,” Mr Musepa said at a media briefing last week.
