‘NRC issuance, voters registration should be simultaneous’

ALVIN CHIINGA, Lusaka
CHIEF Government spokesperson Chishimba Kambwili says Government will positively consider public appeals for the mobile issuance of national registration cards (NRCs) and registration of voters to be done simultaneously to ensure that citizens are not disenfranchised.
Mr Kambwili, who is Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services,  said in an interview that people in most places he has visited  have raised concerns over the manner in which the mobile issuance of NRCs and voter registration exercise are being conducted.
He said they want the two national exercises to be undertaken simultaneously.
“I have gone round the country and the collective feeling is that some people, especially the young people, feel that they will be disenfranchised if the two programmes are not synchronised,” he said.
Mr Kambwili said he would meet Ministry of Home Affairs and Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) officials tomorrow to discuss the proposal.
He said the voters’ registration exercise is an important undertaking which requires everyone’s involvement.
Mr Kambwili also said the ECZ should go back to areas where it conducted voter registration before the mobile issuance of NRCs started.
He said it is inevitable for the two exercises to take place side by side because youths can only register as voters if they have NRCs.
Mr Kambwili appealed to Zambians to take the two exercises seriously.
He said all citizens should be given an opportunity to vote so that election results reflect the true will of the people.
