‘Mwanakatwe was fired over Zesco unbundling’

FORMER Minister of Finance Margaret Mwanakatwe was fired after she allegedly supported the proposal to unbundle Zesco and restructure its debt.
In his latest book titled ‘Corporate Capture’, former Zesco board chairperson Mbita Chitala says the resolution to unbundle Zesco resulted in Chinese lenders stopping funding projects that were being undertaken by the power company.
But Mrs Mwanakatwe says she was not relieved of her duties by former President Edgar Lungu due to the reasons advanced by Dr Chitala.
In his book on how Zesco was managed during his tenure as board chairperson, the public policy analyst says in November 2018, the then Secretary to the Cabinet sent a letter informing him about Cabinet’s views regarding Zesco.
Following a Cabinet decision in 2017, a task force was formed to undertake a diagnostic study of the challenges Zesco was facing.
