Mulungushi University re-opens

CHAMBO NG’UNI, Kapiri Mposhi
MULUNGUSHI University has re-opened 16 days after Minister of Higher Education Nkandu Luo announced its closure prompted by students’ protests over hiked tuition fees.

During their protests last month, the students ran amok destroying university property and private vehicles, leading to the arrest of 59 of them.
A check yesterday at Mulungushi University main campus around 12:30 hours revealed a calm situation, with students registering and being screened before being allowed to occupy their rooms.
The university’s corporate affairs officer, James Pondo, said in an interview that students started reporting on Sunday and are being re-admitted after being screened.
Mr Pondo said 10 students have been slapped with one year suspensions, while others have been charged.  Union activities for students at Mulungushi University remain suspended until the next academic year.
