Mulobezi calms, ECZ on alert

STEVEN MVULA, Lusaka
THE Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) says campaigns in Mulobezi have been peaceful and the area has not recorded fresh cases of electoral violence.
ECZ public relations manager Cris Akufuna said in an interview yesterday that the commission is, however, closely monitoring the campaigns in all areas where by-elections will take place on June 30.
“We are closely monitoring the campaigns in Mulobezi and all other areas. The situation has since normalised but we are still observing,” Mr Akufuna said.
He said there have been no adverse reports from areas where campaigns are taking place.
Mr Akufuna said the district conflict management committees have not reported complaints of electoral violence.
Mulobezi was recently rocked with electoral violence prompting some sections of society to demand that the poll be postponed.
Patriotic Front secretary-general Davies Chama was attacked by suspected United Party for National Development cadres some of whom have been arrested.
The PF is fielding Patricia Mulasikwanda while the UPND will have Hastings Sililo on their ticket.
