Mukanga wants Mufulira to lead way in producing stars

KANTANSHI Member of Parliament Yamfwa Mukanga says there is need for Mufulira to regain its prowess as a producer of quality soccer players.
Speaking at the end of the Mukaya Mukanga Memorial tournament on Thursday, Mukanga said the purpose of organising the tournament was to groom young footballers that would ably represent the country at the international level.
“I want to ensure that one day, Mufulira will go back to what it used to be when we had a lot of good players coming from here. We want to groom young players so that when we talk about Zambian football, we talk about serious stars,” he said.
Samuel ‘Zoom’ Ndhlovu, Kalusha Bwalya, Charles Musonda, Johnson Bwalya, Ashios Melu, Efford Chabala, Frederick Kashimoto and Harrison Chongo among others are some of the players that hailed from Mufulira and played at the highest level.
Mukanga, who is Minister of Works and Supply, said his late father always wanted to bring people together.
He promised to make the tournament bigger and better next year.
And Ronald Ross United won the tournament after beating Damiano Academy 2-1 at Damiano Grounds.
Ronald Ross pocketed K1,500 while Damiano Academy received K1,000.
Ronald Ross overcame Minambe Super Eagles 2-0 in the semi-finals while Damiano Academy beat Mufulira Soccer Academy by the same margin.
Mufulira Soccer Academy finished third and walked away with K750 while fourth-placed Minambe Super Eagles got K500.
Meanwhile, Damiano Academy proprietor Damiano Mutale thanked Mukanga for his role in developing soccer in Mufulira.
