TEN contestants representing the 10 provinces of Zambia will next Friday battle it out for the Miss Tourism Zambia 2016 title and First Lady Esther Lungu is expected as guest of honour at Golden Peacock hotel in Lusaka.
The 10 contestants are Rose Fielding (North-Western), Abigail Chama (Central), Nkumbu Namusamba (Muchinga), Emily Limpic (Copperbelt), Wendy Manyanga (Southern), Justina Chirwa (Eastern) Catherine Mulenga (Northern), Febby Mwandama (Luapula) Melba Shakabozha (Lusaka) and Maimbolwa Ing’ombe representing Western Province.
The models will compete in four categories — safaris wear which is meant to promote wildlife conservation, sportswear, traditional wear to showcase the country’s diverse culture and Afrocentric evening to promote local designs and trends.
Miss Tourism Zambia aims to market the country’s major tourist attractions which include the world famous Victoria Falls, vast wildlife resources, varied scenery, wilderness, diverse culture, national heritage, good weather, adventure activities, including hunting.
These features are what are illustrated as themes and concepts in the pageant, which is among the consistently organised in the country.
As the pageant also serves as a model and talent search competition, the judges will be looking for a youth tourism ambassador and advocate for wildlife and protection of the environment and climate change.
Miss Tourism Zambia is owned by Caroline Makasa who has been organising the event since 2004.
Past winners of the pageant have promoted Zambia’s tourist attractions at various international pageants in China, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Japan, Macau, Venezuela, the U.S.A, Tanzania and Greece among other countries.
The pageant owner has 12 years of experience in pageant management and prides herself in being the first national pageant organiser in the country to introduce and hold provincial auditions in all the 10 provinces of Zambia in 2013. This is what culminated in the successful hosting of the Miss Culture Zambia national pageant during the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) general assembly in 2013 in Livingstone.
