Minister praises defence wings for safeguarding country

DEPUTY Minister of Defence Christopher Mulenga has commended defence wings for their efforts of safeguarding the country’s territory and integrity.
He said Government also appreciates the key roles the defence wings play during disasters.
Mr Mulenga, who was speaking during the send-off parade of the first Zambian battalion to war-torn Central African Republic (CAR) yesterday, said as a member of the international community, Zambia has mobilised resources to support efforts aimed at ending the conflict.
“We are all aware that the country’s instability has had a negative effect on its governance and agenda of development to the benefit of its people and through the United Nations (UN), we want to assist towards the attainment of peace and stability,” he said.
Mr Mulenga cautioned the 750 troops deployed to CAR to maintain professionalism and good discipline for which the country is highly rated during various UN peace-keeping operations.
“Do not, for any reason, get entangled in the politics of the host country. Admittedly the political campaigns shall have an impact on your operations, but it is incumbent on you to act professional by always being neutral and non-partisan.
Be morally upright, the HIV/AIDS pandemic respects no profession, be mindful of the families you are leaving behind and the numerous responsibilities that fall on your shoulders,” he said.
Mr Mulenga also thanked the United States of America through its embassy in Zambia for the support rendered for the pre-deployment training.
“The support given to our troops demonstrates the importance which the US government attaches to international peace and security,”he said.
Earlier Zambia Army commander Paul Mihova commended Government for providing financial and material back-up during the period of training despite the current prevailing harsh economic challenges.
Lieutenant-General Mihova called on the troops to maintain the highest standard and core military values of good discipline to safeguard and enhance the good image of the defence force and the country at large.
