Mines told not to arm-twist Government on taxes

THE Association of Mine Suppliers and Contractors (AMSC) is disappointed that some mining companies are allegedly trying to “arm- twist” Government over the new tax regime.
AMSC president Augustine Mubanga said in an interview yesterday that it is disheartening that some mining companies always threaten to cut jobs and halt expansion projects whenever Government proposes measures aimed at deriving maximum benefits from the mining industry.
Mr Mubanga said the conduct of mining companies has hampered development over the years because Zambians have not benefited much from the country’s mineral wealth.
“It is sad that mining companies think it is okay for Government to continue funding their operations through Value Added Tax refunds,” he said.
