Mine expansion ops on hold

HONE SIAME, Kitwe
CHAMBISHI Non-Ferrous Africa Mining (NFCA) has suspended the development of its US$832 million South East Ore Body (SEOB) expansion project following the death of three miners in an underground explosion last Wednesday.
NFCA corporate affairs manager Nelson Jirowa said in an interview on Saturday that the mining company has temporarily halted works at the project.
Mr Jirowa said NFCA is saddened by the deaths of the miners.
The three miners, including a Chinese, worked for Tongguan Mine Construction, a company engaged by NFCA to work on the SEOB project in Chambishi.
The victims are Juma Chibuye, 38, of Zambia township in Chambishi, Joseph Mumba, 53, also of the same township and Chen Weibin, 53, of Chinese House in Mukulumpe area.
They were sinking a ventilation shaft.  NFCA is developing the US$832 million SEOB project which will create 5,000 jobs for the local people.  The project will be commissioned in 2017.
