Masaiti prepares for industrial growth

NKOLE MULAMBIA, Ndola
MASAITI District Council is working on modalities to intensify development of an industrial cluster in the area following a recent directive by President Lungu, Council secretary Magubbwi Simunkolomba has said.
Meanwhile, the municipality has reserved 10 hectares of land for interested developers in Chiwala estate located near Dangote cement plant.
Mr Simunkolomba said the presidential directive is a positive move looking at the massive development put up by Dangote Group.
“This plant can’t just be a stand-alone infrastructure. So like the president directed, we are placing emphasis to see that there is development of industrial cluster around the place,” he said in an interview yesterday.
He said for starters, there is already Access Bank which has come on board to put up a bank opposite the Dangote plant.
“Originally land falls under customary tenure, so we have to convert it into leasehold. We need to have meetings with stakeholders including, the chief who is the custodian of that land and of course, the council, Zambia Development Agency and provincial planning unit,” he said.
Mr Simunkolomba said looking at the conduciveness of economic climate now prevailing in the country, it is also prudent that the local authority takes the presidential directive seriously because it will create employment and will be a revenue base for the council and uplift the status of the district.
He said the municipality will soon convene meetings with all stakeholders who are interested to the development.
On whether land is available, Mr Simunkolomba said the council will definitely find land for the development.
The Chiwala estate is zoned into commercial, light industrial and residential purposes.
He said once people start developing the land, it will give the council an insight of what type of development will be there.
“We want to have an integrated development plan for that area, so definitely we will get back to the chief and knock on his door so that we can get more land,” he said.
Recently, President Lungu directed the council to reserve land around Dangote Cement plant to create an industrial centre in the area.
