HONE SIAME, Lusaka
THE Malawian government has banned Zambia’s United Progressive People (UPP) president Saviour Chishimba and South Africa’s opposition Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema from entering that country.
Dr Chishimba and Mr Malema have since been declared prohibited immigrants by Malawian authorities.
The two opposition leaders were scheduled to attend the inaugural Transformation Alliance Anti-Corruption Conference in Malawi before they were banned from entering that country.
This is according to a letter by Malawi’s Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Grace Chiumia obtained by the Daily Mail yesterday.
“Please, take notice that in exercise of the powers conferred on me by Section 4(1) (h) of the Immigration Act, I declare the following persons namely Saviour Chishimba and Julius Malema to be prohibited immigrants,” the letter reads in part.
Ms Chiumia has since directed immigration authorities in Malawi to ensure that Dr Chishimba and Mr Malema do not enter the country.
The UPP leader recently took the lead in spearheading the allegation of a maize scandal that dominated the local and international media.
By press time yesterday, Dr Chishimba could not be reached for a comment as his mobile phone was still switched off.
