A TWENTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD man of Lusaka’s Libala South has been arrested for allegedly battering his 20-year-old girlfriend.
Police spokesperson Charity Chanda said in an interview that  Chasaya Mwaba was arrested on Monday for allegedly battering Mercy Lweendo and causing multiple head injuries.
“The incident happened on Saturday around 15 hours in Chilenje. The man is believed to have used fists in beating his partner who is of unsound mind. Mr Mwaba is detained at Chilenje Police Station,” Ms Chanda said.
And Ms Lweendo said her boyfriend was in the habit of beating her whenever he returned home drunk. She met Mwaba in a bar in Lusaka’s Chaisa area early this year and the two decided to start living together as husband and wife.
“My boyfriend beats me whenever he gets drunk and I suspect that he uses drugs because he has a strange behaviour. He found me talking to a man at the market where I had gone to buy something; he suspected him to be my boyfriend,” Ms Lweendo said.
And Mr Mwaba’s father Friday said he decided to report his son to the police when he found him beating his girlfriend at home.
“My son brought his girlfriend home because he told me that she had nowhere to go as she was an orphan. I gave them a room in my house where they were co-habiting for some time until last Saturday when this incident happened,” Mr Mwaba said.
Meanwhile the mother of the battered woman Dorris Malila expressed shock that her daughter was co-habiting with a man.
Ms Malila said her daughter disappeared on May 28 this year and her whereabouts were unknown until the incident on Saturday.
Lweendo is receiving treatment in the University Teaching Hospital; Ms Malila, who is on the bedside, fears for her firstborn daughter’s life of whom she alleges has a mental problem.
