Lungu to commission Maamba power plant

CONSTRUCTION of the country’s first-ever 600 megawatts (MW) thermal power plant at Maamba Coal Mine in Sinazongwe in Southern Province is complete and scheduled to be commissioned this month by President Lungu.
Sinanzongwe district commissioner Protashio Mulenga said the plant, which will be managed by Maamba Collieries Limited, is currently on test transmission by the main contractor, Shangdong Electric Power Corporation (SEPCO) in readiness for commissioning.
He said so far, the test transmission has progressed well, adding that the contractor is remaining with a few ‘touches’ to the plant before it is launched.
Mr Mulenga said in an interview on Friday that the US$500 million thermal plant will initially generate 150 MW to the national grid.
